Is Creighton the Dumbest Man on the Planet?

No, of course not. He’d barely make the top ten. But he is one hell of a fuckwit.

Victorians, just ignore these fucking lunatics and fucking stay in your fucking homes.*

  1. I can’t say that I ever read The Australian, so I don’t really know what he’s like. His friends probably say that he’s genuinely a really nice guy. However, I get the feeling that people like Creighton push this kind of line because they value their stock portfolio more than they care about a few plebs dying. I would suggest that this is more likely malicious than dumb.

    1. Damo, I think Creighton and his cronies are more ideologically driven than you suggest. Malicious or not, his attack on Andrews’ restrictions as “effective dictatorship” is Gold Medal dumb.

    1. Yeah, I know. Even in Creighton’s banana republic there’s many who are way dumber. But the little shit is plenty dumb.

  2. I admit I actually laughed at first – he seems like he is parodying himself! But on the other hand, I have a brother who reads The Australian and would say similar things. So I see how this might affect people. My brother is smarter than me. I don’t think stupidity is the problem. It’s something else.

    1. Adam Cretin’s general inhuman economics is ideologically blinkered and disgusting, but not dumb. His tweet is really fucking dumb.

      1. I’m not sure it is, technically. I think he has different goals and values to us. He doesn’t even live in Victoria. I suspect he doesn’t care if a lot of people die or not, especially not people he perceives as being of less value than him. He’s swaying opinion the way he wants to. It’s not dumb. It’s something else – not valuing the lives of people? selfishness? carelessness? something like that.

        1. I think you’re wrong. I think you have to distinguish being dumb from doing dumb. Smart people can still do very dumb. Your brother, it seems, for example. And Australian statisticians.

Although he’s not the rocket social scientist he imagines himself to be, Creighton is not dumb. But he is still capable of allowing his “money first, people second” clown act to overtake the sense he has, and I think he has done so here. I don’t see anything strategically smart in his tweet.

          1. Fair enough. I searched and found there is a difference between “being dumb/stupid” and “doing dumb/stupid” (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/10/19/how-to-act-less-stupid-according-to-psychologists), that I wasn’t cognizant of before.

In thinking that the two were related, I was uncomfortable with how close it seems to valuing and respecting people according to how smart they are. I admire intelligence, but I don’t think it’s one-dimensional and listening to people who may be perceived as less intelligent is important to me, if that makes sense.

            1. Huh, I didn’t know that difference either. I just make it up as I go along.

Your second paragraph makes perfect sense. My title is accordingly inaccurate, but given the hyperbole, I figured it a small issue. The point of picking on Creighton is not that he is intrinsically dumb, but that he is being carelessly or wilfully dumb, and that he has power. As always with these things, the concern should be to punch up, not down.
