Once upon a time, The New York Review of Books was excellent, and one of their best writers on politics was Lars-Erik Nelson. Nelson’s most famous line is,
The enemy isn’t conservatism. The enemy isn’t liberalism. The enemy is bullshit.
It’s a great line, but it is not quite correct. The correct line is,
The enemy isn’t just liberalism. The enemy isn’t just conservatism. The enemy is also bullshit.
Sadly, the much more dangerous enemy now is liberalism. And, the marriage of liberalism and bullshit is a hell-union.
“On bullshit” by Harry Frankfurt is a good read.
Indeed.
