Tom “The Prof” Peachey, who comments here on occasion and also runs the Teaching Mathematics blog, has decided to offer some free VCE physics prep over the summer. Tom’s intro:
I’m concerned that fewer students are doing Specialist Maths and even fewer, Physics. Not so long ago students going on to Engineering needed to sit both of these subjects. Now entry requirements are quite relaxed but this causes higher failure rates in the long run.
So I thought I would do my bit and offer an introductory Physics course over January, aimed at those going into Year 11, but open to anyone. The VCE Physics exam can be largely done by reading each question, finding the closest formula on the formula sheet and then pressing the calculator keys. My course instead will try to instil the gut understanding of how the world works. This will be confined to the Mechanics part of the subject. It’s 1 1/2 hours twice a week through January. So, are there any students near Broadmeadows who want to get a leg up?
If you know students in the Broadmeadows area who may be interested, please point them to the info above. And, for anyone who wishes to post the flyer somewhere, the PDF is here.
Good idea Tom. Congratulations.
