David Treeby, of Enrichment Mathematics fame, has alerted me to a free online calculus text (lecture notes), which may be of interest to you senior school mathematics guys. The text is by Richard Hammack, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. I hadn’t heard of Hammack but he seems like a very interesting guy.
David says that Hammack’s text is very good – “He writes well and has very good taste for example and exercise selection” – while noting that the text is short on deeper-harder problems (and on the extended-problem slop that one requires to practise for VCE). Hammack is also the author of Book of Proof, which is also free online (and can be purchased as a hard copy), and which David says is also very good.
I’ve added both of Hammack’s texts to the good resources list. I’m always open to new suggestions.
Many thanks. Looks bloody good !
I tested it out. Checked the front piece – fundamental idea of calculus – curves become straight when zoomed in – very interesting and a perspective I hadn’t really thought of – useful for teaching – so it gets a tick from me. Thanks!
