UPDATE (05/10/26)
I’ve added below a third, just released, video, which includes references to and a brief interview with Robert.
***************************************************************************************************************************************
A couple weeks ago, I wrote about Burkard’s and my wandering minstrel days, which included the unpredictable meeting of various strange and unusual people. One of these strange and unusual people was Melburnian Robert Webb: musician, programmer, God-knows-what-er. A few years back, I posted (and again and again) on Robert’s excellently disturbing music and accompany videos: give Treat a listen and look. Long before that, Burkard and I wrote about Stella, Robert’s remarkable software for visualising and creating polyhedra. Robert is back.
Robert has contacted me and Burkard to let us know that, after twelve years, he has completed a major update, to Stella 6.0, including a bunch of new features.* Stella has featured in recent Numberphile videos – see below – on the discovery of very crazy toroidal polyhedra, and with another video coming, on the classification of things called noble polyhedra.
Amazing guy, amazing stuff. Check Robert out, check Stella out.
* Stella comes in various versions, including demos, with various pricings depending upon intended use, and including educational packages. Stella is a Windows thing, so Macs have to run it under Wine or Parallels. Robert says it works very well on Wine except for some printing issue on some modern Macs (which you can check with the demos).
And woh! to toroids! [11:00 THE HOLEY MONSTER].
[and then you find an octagon… when the clay fills it up].
That “spiky” thing reminds me a lot of Mathematica’s logo…
And these convex and quasi-convex shapes.
